Where Healing Happens Through Play

Every child has a story, but they don’t always have the words to tell it. Our play therapy provides a safe, imaginative space where your child can express themselves, process big emotions, and find their way back to joy.

Kids Play Therapy at Rene Health Clinic

What Is Play Therapy?
At Rene Health Clinic, we recognize that mental health support for children requires a thoughtful, age-appropriate approach. Play therapy is a specialized form of mental health counselling designed specifically for children. Just as adults use words to process emotions in therapy, children use play. It is their natural language and a powerful tool for self-expression.

Play therapy provides children with a safe and supportive space where they can explore emotions, express themselves, and make sense of difficult experiences—using toys, art, storytelling, and imaginative play. Through guided play, children can communicate feelings they may not have the words for, allowing our trained therapists at Rene Health Clinic to help them work through issues such as anxiety, grief, trauma, behavioural challenges, and family transitions.

How Play Therapy Supports Mental Health
Our play therapy sessions aim to foster emotional resilience, improve communication skills, and encourage healthy coping strategies. Children who participate in play therapy often experience:

  • Reduced anxiety and emotional distress

  • Improved self-esteem and confidence

  • Positive changes in behaviour and social skills

  • Stronger emotional connections with caregivers and peers

At Rene Health Clinic, we are committed to supporting your child’s mental health and overall well-being. Our mental health professionals tailor each play therapy session to your child’s unique needs, helping them grow, heal, and thrive in a compassionate and nurturing environment.

Play is a child’s natural language. While adults use words to process emotions, children use play to "play out" their inner world. In play therapy, a trained therapist uses toys, sand, art, and games to help children express what they can't yet put into words. This allows them to process trauma, manage anxiety, and develop better problem-solving skills in a way that feels safe and natural to them.

Play therapy is typically most effective for children between the ages of 3 and 12. However, the approach is highly developmental. For younger children, the focus is on emotional regulation and attachment, while for older children (pre-teens), we may blend play with more traditional talk therapy or creative arts to help them navigate their growing independence and social challenges.

You are the most important person in your child’s life, so your involvement is key! While the child usually meets with the therapist one-on-one to build trust and privacy, we schedule regular parent consultation sessions. During these meetings, we discuss your child's progress, share insights into their emotional world, and give you practical "at-home" tools to support their growth.

Play therapy is highly effective for a wide range of social, emotional, and behavioral issues. This includes generalized anxiety, social withdrawal, difficulty adjusting to life changes (like divorce or a new sibling), grief and loss, ADHD-related frustrations, and healing after a traumatic event. It helps the child move from a state of "reaction" to a state of "resilience."

Every child’s healing journey is unique. Some children show signs of improvement—such as better sleep, fewer meltdowns, or increased confidence—within 8 to 12 sessions. However, deep-seated emotional challenges may take longer. Our goal at Rene Health is not just a "quick fix," but to help your child build a strong emotional foundation that lasts a lifetime.
